Every day of filming this documentary was an eye-opening experience. The families, students, Humber faculty and Christian Horizons staff came together to form a team geared towards launching these students into a lifelong goal of self-sufficiency. "A Better Slice of Life" premiered at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto on March 8, 2016.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016, marked the premiere of "A Better Slice of Life" at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. The culinary students (now graduates) and their families along with guests from Humber, Christian Horizons, and the general public, came together to preview this powerful documentary based on the journey of people with disabilities gaining their independence by learning practical culinary skills.

The night was truly a celebration. The graduates were treated to a reception giving them a chance to reconnect and talk about their amazing experiences since completing the program. The doors of the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema opened to the general public at 6:30 pm for the screening.

The night kicked off with opening remarks from Irene Moore, Area Manager (Central District) at Christian Horizons and Gina Antonacci, Associate Vice-President Academic at Humber College. Both spoke passionately about the importance of inclusive, skills-based learning and the far-reaching impact of programs like the Culinary Skill Development and Employment program.

"A Better Slice of Life" takes a closer look at the lives of Dori, Maddie, Scott and Jim. Camera crews followed these four students over their DSW experience at Humber and Christian Horizons capturing their journey from their first class to their graduation ceremony. It proved to be an emotional and educational journey for all who attended.

The evening closed with remarks from Christian Horizons CEO Janet Nolan who expressed congratulations and gratitude to all involved in this amazing project that allows the students choice and a chance to follow their dreams.
